It's that time of year again, when day turns to night before you've made it out of work, and the wind begins bringing Arctic cold to our streets, and the best place to be is in front of a warm fire, with a mug of hot chocolate, reading a really good book.
Or, in front of a computer screen, with a sugar rush, writing a ropey, questionable excuse for a book.
Yes, November is National Novel Writing Month, when thousands of wasters like myself decide that although we really don't have the time to write a novel, we're going to do it anyway.
Here's what I've written so far:
// I've taken my novels offline with the intention of doing something useful with them. Watch this space...
01. The List
02. Waiting for Spring
03. The Employed Slacker
04. A Proper Diet
05. Love Soup
06. Proper Society
07. Hope Deferred

09. Sunday Club
10. Surrender

29. Goodbye, Cruel World
NaNoWriMo www.nanowrimo.org/ is my excuse to take 30 days out of my life to be completely unsociable and throw myself into the challenge of writing 1,667 words of fiction each day.
That's 50,000 words by the end of the month.
I'm going to do this armed only with an idea for an opening scene and a potentially lethal quantity of chocolate, so we'll just have to see if a plot emerges before I develop Type II Diabetes.
Plotlessness and a sugar-based diet are not the only perils I will face. To increase the pressure of the 30-day deadline, I am seeking sponsorship to raise money for a cause dear to my heart: the Spring of Life Care Centre in Beirut, Lebanon. This is a project in a slum called Naba'a, providing education, food, clothing and social time for children who would otherwise be left to roam the streets, or be locked away at home while their parents work 12-hour days just to scrape a living. The Care Centre also hosts a clinic giving free medical consultations and medicines to very poor families who cannot afford access to healthcare. You can learn more about it here: www.kidsalive.org/lebanon/spri…
My sponsorship forms are pinned on the noticeboard at the back of the GateWay Auditorium, or if you're not in South Somerset, but would like to sponsor my attempt at a novel, please get in touch.
Just in case the looming deadline and the weight of trying to raise money for Naba'a aren't enough to bring on writer's block, I will also be posting my raw, unedited prose on the internet.
Each day, whatever I write will appear here - regardless of what state it is in - so you can join me on my ill-advised novel writing adventure.

I Only Get In Touch When I Want Something...
So, I guess it's been about 3 years since I last logged in to dA. Hi.
Obviously, I need money. I won't insult your intelligence by pretending this is a social call.
In 2007/8 I wrote a novel called "It is Better to Marry than to Burn" and published the first draft of each chapter here as I wrote it. Last Summer, I pulled it all offline to edit it and self-publish as an eBook.
Right now, I'm using Kickstarter to fund a print run of the paperback. Find out more and get involved right here.
Read the opening chapters here.
I've also been doing this "Sketch Busking" thing, which is like regular busking, but with sketches. Intrigued?
As if th
The Last Five Percent...
The last 5% or so of a project seems to take forever...
Grateful it Doesn't Smell Like Horror...
A problem with the lights gives our bathroom an atmosphere of Survival Horror, with buzzing and flickering and insufficient illumination. Which, obviously, is awesome.
Probably won't seem so awesome next time I have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night following dreams of a zombie apocalypse, but I'll enjoy it while it lasts.
Desire vs. Comfort
I am upstairs.
Dr. Pepper is downstairs.
Doctor
Doctor
He can't hear me.
Why did I leave him behind?
Is my desire strong enough to draw me out of this place of comfort?
It remains to be seen.
